Interview with Jesse Horn '07, senior class president

What is the best part of being at CC?
Jesse HornJesse Horn '07The best thing about CC is that everybody talks to you and is so personable. I came here the summer of my senior year of high school and I noticed it immediately.  Everyone from food service, to the groundskeepers, to Lynette at the Worner desk, is so welcoming and willing to help out. You’re in an environment that’s cooperative, not competitive, and that speaks a lot to why people come here.

What advice would you give to an incoming first-year student?
"Get involved because there’s every group imaginable on campus. I know it’s easier to say and harder to do because you’re so busy adjusting to the Block Plan and other things when you first get to CC, but it’s so crucial. Get your hallmates together and form an intramural team, or go to a club meeting, because when you look back on your four years here, no matter how involved you are on campus, and there are really involved people on campus, it’s never enough. You’re within two hours of  everything you’d ever want to do, from Denver being an hour away, to a short drive for snowboarding, skiing, kayaking, fishing. Do everything you’d ever want to do and get involved on campus."

What are you most looking forward to after you graduate?
"I’m looking forward to law school next year. I’m going to Cornell University and I know it’s going to be rough as a first year, but I’m excited because I’ve always wanted to become a lawyer. My dad’s a lawyer, and although I never initially intended to follow in his footsteps, as I got older I thought, “actually, I’d love to do that.”  In ten or 15 years, after I finish law school, I’d like to get involved with civil rights and discrimination law.  Also, I’d like to get involved with the Americans With Disabilities Act, whether it be through legal battles, and just having the opportunity to help others just as I’ve been helped. Specifically, I’m looking forward to getting snowboarding involved with the Paralympics, the disabled Olympics. I think it’s especially important with the current climate of so many veterans returning home disabled, and having the opportunity to show them that there’s so much they can do. I think CC, where there’s an impeccable drive to help others, has influenced me tremendously, and helping others is what I’m most looking forward to."
