News from The Colorado College Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (2009/2010):

• June 2009

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry in conjunction with the Department of Biology awards the first undergraduate summer research stipends as part of the
Merck-AAAS Undergraduate Science Research Program to support collaborative interdisciplinary research between the two departments. The Colorado College is one of only 14 academic institutions that received an award in the 2009 competition.

• July 2009

Professor Rongson Pongdee is awarded a research grant from the National Institutes of Health in the amount of $ 191, 317 over three years to support his group's research on the design and development of new antibacterial agents as potential drug candidates to combat the increasing rise of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the NIH institute to which Professor Pongdee applied, reviewed 4,039 new applications; only 806 were funded.

• August 2009

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is host to the American Society for Molecular Biology and Biochemistry's "Student-Centered Education in the Molecular Life Sciences" Conference. This special symposium is designed for educators engaged in teaching undergraduate students. The meeting will focus primarily on emerging pedagogies in the education of students in the molecular life sciences. The goals of the meeting are to supply participants with educational approaches and materials that they can implement in their own classrooms and to provide them with networking and mentoring opportunities.
