Race and Ethnic Studies
at Colorado College

Our Mission - Section title

The American Cultural Studies program (formerly American Ethnic Studies) at Colorado College promotes student interest and faculty scholarship in the critical examination of America's ethnic and racial groups in the structural contexts of power.

The United States has always been an arena where sometimes competing, sometimes cooperating cultural groups contribute to the economic, political, and cultural life in this country. The American Cultural Studies program faculty strongly believes that responsible citizenship entails:

  • developing a knowledge of the historical and contemporary relationships among the cultural groups
  • an understanding of the dynamic constructions and reconstructions of racial and ethnic identity
  • an appreciation of the contributions of each group to American society
  • and a commitment to justice

The American Cultural Studies program at Colorado College is committed to providing the leadership and curriculum necessary to create a truly diverse, sophisticated, and responsible campus that operates as a national model for educating students in the 21st century.
