American cultural studies
The American cultural studies program encourages student interest in and understanding of the historical and current relationships between cultural groups in the United States. The program coordinates courses cross-listed from other departments in order to provide critical interdisciplinary perspectives and methodologies for the study of issues such as identity, race, immigration, public policy and cultural expression.

Departmental major/ international affairs option
The option is designed to allow students the advantage of a traditional major along with a development of an understanding of international affairs. It assumes that such an understanding begins to develop through study of a foreign language, an extended experience outside one's own country, and a familiarity with approaches, which address the affairs of nations and peoples.

Environmental studies
The environmental studies major requires courses in variety of disciplines such as mathematics, geology, physics, biology and a selection of non-science environmental courses. The social science courses should include such topics as public policy, demographics, and economics of environmental regulation.

Liberal arts and sciences
Some students may wish to pursue a major different from the already existing disciplinary or interdisciplinary ones. Such students may petition to major in liberal arts and sciences (LAS). This option permits students, with the help of two faculty advisors from different departments, to design special interdisciplinary concentrations according to special interests and needs.

North American studies
The program is designed to provide an understanding of the complex regional forces shaping North America. Political, social, cultural and economic ties among Mexico, the United States and Canada are transforming all three countries, creating a region which is ever more closely related and interdependent.

Juan Lindau, Political science.

The program combines courses and research on the American Southwest. The region includes Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, southern California, Utah, and northern Mexico. Required courses in the major include such topics as American Indian and Latino music, art, or literature; anthropology, history, sociology or economics of the Southwest; and geology, field biology, field zoology, or environmental science.
