Panzers, self-contained armored units able to operate independently, became the nucleus of the German army’s fighting power as well as its moral focus and the core of its identity, establishing an entirely new military doctrine. Showalter is a visiting professor and guest lecturer at West Point, and former president of the Society for Military History. The book, published by Putnam Berkley Publishing Group, will be available Dec. 1.
