Academic Honor System

The Honor Code

The Honor Code forbids students from giving or receiving unauthorized aid on papers, exams and assignments.

  • The Honor Code is the document that governs academic conduct here at CC.  The Constitution is available in this section of the Pathfinder.

Remember:  Students are responsible for everything the Honor Code says, even if you never read it.  Ignorance is not an excuse for cheating!!!

CC instituted the Honor Code to show respect for student integrity, uphold the value of each student’s degree, and to ensure equal treatment among students for honor infractions.

The CC Honor Council is a group of 25-50 students who educate the campus about the Honor Code as well as enforce the Honor Code by investigating instances of cheating on our campus.

  • The Honor Council is made up of students, just like you.
  • The Honor Council is a recommending body.
  • The Honor Code is strict.
  • The Honor Code applies to all academic behaviors; non-academic behaviors such as drinking fall under the purview of the Student Conduct Committee.

Academic integrity is important.  As one professor at CC says, “In 20 years, you’ll never remember the grade you got on an exam, but you will remember if you had to cheat to get that grade.”

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own.

Some instances of plagiarism:

  1. Trying to camouflage copying by changing the context of the original paper.  For example, turning in a draft purporting to be the security policy of one institution by simply copying an existing security policy from an existing institution.
  2. Missing footnotes.
  3. Using false references; references that do not exist.

Dead giveaways of Internet plagiarism:

  • Essay refers to or cites the lectures of a mystery instructor.
  • Essay lifts sentences or paragraphs from a Web resource without any footnote.
  • Essay contains a reference to its origin on the last page.
  • Essay is grade-school quality.
  • One part of the essay is written in a really different style than the rest.
  • Essay is way off topic.
  • Strange/poor layout.
  • The essay has been printed from the student's Internet browser.
  • The references are all from books not available at your college or are all from another country.
