Andrew, currently the department Chair, joined the faculty of Colorado College in 2005. He received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto in 1999, where he also served as founding director of the Project on Health and Global Affairs at the Munk Center for International Studies. Prior to that he received his M.A. from the University of Western Ontario, and a B.A. (Honors) from Queen's University. From 1999-2000 he completed a post-doctoral appointment in the Earth Institute of Columbia University. Following that he taught at the University of South Florida in the departments of Government and Environmental Sciences.
Promoted to Associate Professor of Political Science in 2010, he also served as Interim Chair of Environmental Science in 2010. Price-Smith is author of several books including Contagion and Chaos: Disease, Ecology and National Security in the Era of Globalization (MIT Press, 2009) which won a Choice Magazine Award for Outstanding Academic Volume of 2009. His other volumes include The Health of Nations (MIT Press, 2002) which was short-listed for the Grawemeyer Award; and Plagues and Politics (Palgrave/Macmillan, 2001). Prof. Price-Smith has testified on climate change, disease, and international security before the U.S. House Science and Technology Committee, and acted as advisor for the U.S. Director of National Intelligence (DNI), and the US Department of Defense. He has also served as advisor to the United States Institute of Peace, the United Nations Development Program, the World Bank, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and for the private sector. He specializes in analyses of the effects of disease, environmental change, and energy scarcity on the security of nations. He has been invited to lecture in the USA, the UK, France, Canada, Costa Rica, and Norway, including institutions such as the University of Oxford, Columbia University, Dartmouth College, and the University of Toronto. Andrew was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He is married to Janell Price-Smith, who is a biologist.
