How do I know if I'm eligible for benefits?

Can I also enroll my dependents on my benefit plans?

Colorado College offers many plans that allow you to cover your dependents. Some of these plans include health, dental, vision and dependent life. Please see your plan details for further information.

Who is considered a dependent for my plan?

Eligible dependents include your legal spouse or, as defined below, your domestic partner, and a child (married or unmarried), as defined below.

"Domestic partner" means the person, regardless of gender, named in the Affidavit of Domestic partnership that you have submitted to and has been approved by the employer.

"Child" means your natural child, your stepchild, a natural child of your covered minor dependent, your adopted child (this includes a child placed with you for adoption; "placed for adoption" means the assumption and retention of a legal obligation for the total or partial support of a child in anticipation of the adoption of such child. The child's placement is considered terminated upon the termination of such legal obligation), a child who is recognized under a medical child support order as having a right to enrollment under the plan, a foster child, and a child of your domestic partner. The child may be covered to the end of the month in which he/she reaches age 26.

Note: The spouse of your eligible married dependent child is not eligible for coverage. Your dependents must live in the United States to be eligible for coverage. A spouse or domestic partner or child who is covered under this plan as an employee may not be covered as a dependent.

When are my benefits effective?

Benefits are effective the first of the month immediately after you are hired into a benefit eligible position. If hired to start on the first, benefit eligibility begins immediately.

When must I enroll in the benefits?

You have 31 days from your initial eligibility date in which to enroll in benefits. If you do not enroll during this period, you must wait until the next scheduled open enrollment unless you have a qualifying event.

What is a qualifying event?

There are two types of qualifying events listed by the Internal Revenue Service. They are family status changes and employment changes. Family status changes include marriage, divorce, birth or adoption of a child, death of a spouse/dependent or a dependent child reaching the age limit. Employment status changes include your position changing to a benefit eligible position, you or your dependent qualifying for Medicare or a change in coverage due to a spouse's employment change and affecting benefit coverage. Changes to your benefit plans due to a qualifying event must be made within 31 days of the event. Please contact Human Resources or visit our forms on the web to obtain the proper change forms.

What is open enrollment?

Open enrollment is a period during which participants in a benefit program have an opportunity to select an alternate plan being offered to them.

When is open enrollment?

Open enrollment occurs annually at the end of each academic year (May) with enrollment changes effective on July 1st of each year.
